India has become one of the economies in the world with one of the quickest growth rates because to its development on the path of economic reforms.

Despite having a huge chance, India hasn't been able to take advantage of its advantages.

For a number of sectors, the central government has announced programms worth crores. Similar actions must be made for the organic fertilizer sector, as India has the potential to become the world's primary producer of this type of fertilizer.

Government regulations divide organic fertilizer into two categories: bio-fertilizer and organic manure.

Bio-fertilizers are excellent for cultivable land since they contain living microorganisms connected to solid or liquid carriers that aid in boosting the productivity of soil and/or crops.

The term "organic manure" on the other hand describes partially decomposed organic waste, such as compost, vermicompost, and digestate from a biogas plant, which offers nutrients to the soil and crops and increases production.

Based on anticipated MSW generation estimates from the Central Pollution Control Board and the National Solid Waste Association of India, India produces more than 150,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW).

With an 80 percent collection efficiency and a 50 percent organic component in MSW, India produces about 65,000 tonnes of organic garbage daily.

The government may benefit from this even if half of it is diverted to the biogas business by limiting the import of fossil fuels and fertilizers.

In addition to producing biogas, biogas/gobar gas facilities also produce organic fertilizers. The organic fertilizer, sometimes referred to as digestate, which is the effluent from the biogas plant, is also very valuable.

When upgraded, biogas can be used for heating, energy, and even transportation, whereas digestate can assist realize the goal of a second green revolution.

The share of organic fertilizers in total fertilizer use was only 0.29 percent in 2018–19 and 0.34 percent in 2019–20, indicating a poor penetration of organic fertilizers. The government can profit from the production of biogas by encouraging the production of its byproduct, fertilizer.

Through its SATAT programme, the Center has demonstrated its desire to advance the sector. Without a doubt, the prior budget included 468 crores for Central Financial Assistance. However, the sector needs considerably more assistance if it is to save future governments billions of dollars. If all the projects submitted under the SATAT programme are realized, the nation will be able to save $16 billion annually.

Under the SATAT initiative, which the sector has targeted more than 5,000 projects under across the nation, bio-compressed natural gas (bio-CNG) and solid organic manure or digestate can be produced in significant amounts.

Thus, it was estimated that 50 million tones of solid organic manure / digestate will be produced annually in India once these projects are completed, taking into account 8,000 kilogrammes per day of bio-CNG (one tone of CNG can support 100 vehicles to run 250 kilometres per full tank of 10 kilogrammes at the rate of 25 kilometres per kilogramme) and 27 tones per day of solid organic manure per plant.

In recent years, the domestic market has seen an increase in the popularity of organic farming. By 2021, the market for packaged organic foods in India is projected to reach Rs 871 million, growing at a rate of 17%.

The enormous growth of this industry is related to increased consumer spending on food products, rising health concerns, increasing understanding of the negative impacts of synthetic fertilizers on soil, and expanding urban populations.

Both bio fertilizers and organic manure have the potential to totally replace the use of synthetic fertilizers since organic manure can be enhanced with the use of bio fertilizers to meet nutrient requirements.
