In practically every meal, onions constitute a key component of Indian cuisine. In 2020–2021, India produced 26.5 million metric tonnes of onions, ranking second in the world. The top 5 states in India for the production of onions will be covered in this blog.
Maharashtra
With about 30% of the nation's total onion production, Maharashtra is the state that produces the most onions in India. The three districts that produce the most onions in Maharashtra are Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Pune. Red onions from this state are well-known for their powerful flavour and strong scent.
Karnataka
With an output amounting to almost 16% of all onions produced in India, Karnataka is the second-largest producer of onions. Belgaum, Bijapur, and Bagalkot are Karnataka's three main onion-producing regions. Both red and white onions are grown throughout the state, though red onions are more common.
Gujarat
With an output that accounts for 15% of all onions produced in India, Gujarat is the third-largest onion-producing state. Mehsana, Banaskantha, and Sabarkantha are Gujarat's three most important onion-producing regions. White onions, which have a milder flavour than red onions, are famous throughout the state.
Madhya Pradesh
With an output of almost 8% of the nation's total onion crop, Madhya Pradesh ranks as the fourth-largest onion-producing state in India. Mandsaur, Neemuch, and Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh are the principal onion-producing regions. Both red and white onions are grown throughout the state, though red onions are more common.
Bihar
With an output of almost 5% of the nation's total production, Bihar is the fifth-largest onion-producing state in India. Bihar's three main onion-producing regions are Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur. Both red and white onions are grown throughout the state, though red onions are more common.
Maharashtra is the largest onion-producing state in India, followed by Karnataka and Gujarat. Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are also significant onion-producing states in the country. The production of onions in these states is essential for meeting domestic demand and also for export purposes.
