Why is water conservation in agriculture so important for protecting the environment?

One of the most important natural resources on Earth is water. Water is essential for all life forms, including humans, animals, plants, and aquatic organisms. There wouldn't be any life on the world if there wasn't any water.
Even while water covers over 71% of Earth's surface, only 2.5% of that water is fresh, with the remainder being salt water.
The majority of freshwater on earth is used for drinking, domestic use, industry, trade, and agriculture. Water is essential to all aspects of our life, from drinking and bathing to cleaning and using in business and agriculture.
Despite how crucial it is, we have not used it carefully. The priceless resource has been used carelessly and indiscriminately over the past few decades, which is contributing to its rapid depletion from our planet.
Water use has significantly increased over the past few decades as a result of rapid urbanization, growing population, and radical lifestyle changes. As a result, freshwater is being lost quicker than it can be replaced.
The largest user of water, accounting for roughly 70% of all freshwater resources, is the agricultural sector. Domestic consumption comes in at 10%, followed by industrial consumption at 20%.
Trends indicate that by 2050, there will need to be a 50% increase in agricultural production and a 15% rise in water use in order to feed a planet with 9 billion people.
The environmental implications of water waste in agriculture are major areas of concern, despite the fact that many farmers throughout the world rely on groundwater and other piped resources to water their crops.
According to studies, about 40% of the freshwater used for farming is lost to evaporation, spills (from overwatering), or deep infiltration.
Understanding that farmers may help conserve one of nature's most precious resources by using water efficiently is urgently needed. It will also assist in producing crops that are healthier while using less water, or "More Crop Per Drop." Sustainable growth depends on effective water use and management.
We depend on agriculture, and the farming industry is heavily dependent on the environment. In an agrarian economy like India's, where more than half of the population depends on agriculture, this is particularly true.
Conservation of the ecosystem is therefore of utmost importance.
Here are some ways that conserving water in agriculture can aid in protecting the environment.

Use Effective Irrigation Techniques
The most effective use of natural resources will result in significant water savings by switching to contemporary, effective irrigation techniques like "Drip and Sprinkle irrigation."
Unlike the conventional overhead spray approach, the drip irrigation method delivers water to the plant's roots directly.
Drip irrigation conserves up to 80% more water than the conventional method by reducing the percentage of evaporation. Additionally, the yield is increased by about 20%.

Plan the Irrigation
The sustainability of the natural resources and sustainable growth depend on effective water management.
The best use of the natural resource depends on watering the plants at the appropriate time, in the right place, with the right amount, and in the right way.
It lowers the cost of electricity used for irrigation, boosts output, and conserves water.
Timers that are programmed to water during cooler hours of the day can further reduce water loss.
The farmers automate the irrigation schedule using IoT (Internet of Things) technology. Considering the weather, soil and plant moisture levels, temperature, humidity, etc.

Recycle water
Farmers can construct rain barrels to store water during the rainy seasons. When the water supplies run out, they can reuse it to irrigate the crops.
Making unique ponds or reservoirs to hold water will aid in establishing a natural home for wildlife.
This method can prevent the use of millions of gallons of water. This will help in environmental conservation by reducing the strain on natural resources.

Observe good farming practises
Farmers who prioritize sustainability are aware of the numerous advantages of using good agricultural practises.
These include making the most use of resources and employing high-quality planting materials. It entails concentrating on enhancing the soil's quality so that it can hold moisture and oxygen and support the growth of plants.
Adopting healthy farming techniques also means using herbicides and fertilizers responsibly. It makes sure that too many chemicals do not contaminate the soil and harm the environment.
As more farmers make consistent and ongoing efforts in this direction, the harm to the ecosystem will be lessened. It will aid in protecting the environment for upcoming generations.
The destiny of the world is profoundly impacted by each and every one of us. Every action we take, including how we live our daily lives and how responsibly we use the planet's resources, has an impact on its future.
When allowed to flourish, nature performs an excellent job of maintaining the health of our world. But if interfered with too harshly, it might revert to being the biggest taskmaster.
So let's all do our part to restore the vibrancy to our earth. Let's all make a commitment to reconstructing a green world, both for our current generations and for those to come.
