Furthermore, the quality of water is also being affected, with an increase in salinity and other contaminants, which is affecting soil fertility and crop health.
Thirdly, climate change is also leading to the spread of pests and diseases, affecting agriculture's productivity and profitability. The change in temperature and humidity provides favourable conditions for pests and diseases to thrive, leading to a decline in crop yields. The increasing prevalence of pests and diseases is also increasing the cost of inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers, which is affecting the profitability of agriculture.
Measures that can be taken to mitigate it:
Various measures can be taken to mitigate the impact of climate change on agriculture in India. Firstly, there is a need for increased investment in research and development of climate-resilient crops and farming practices. This will help farmers to adapt to changing weather patterns and improve their productivity and profitability.
Secondly, there is a need for the promotion of sustainable farming practices such as conservation agriculture, which focuses on reducing soil erosion and increasing soil health. This will help in increasing soil fertility, reducing the cost of inputs, and improving crop yields.
Thirdly, there is a need for the development of climate-resilient water management practices such as rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharging, and efficient irrigation systems. This will help ensure water availability for agriculture, even in times of drought.
