The primary element or ingredient in dealing with the farming or crop production process is soil. The condition of the crop will be determined by the health and fertility of the soil, which also contributes to maintaining the general fertility of the soil throughout.

Soil is an important natural resource. The mineral particles that make up the soil, the thin layer of material that covers the earth's surface, are produced by the weathering of rocks, decaying organic matter, living creatures, water and air.

How does soil develop?

Two processes that result in the formation of soil are the weathering of rocks and the mixing of the components of rocks with organic waste from dead plants. Water that seeps through weathered rock after rain undergoes a slow chemical change which, also proves to be another step to the development of soil.

Let's look at what is causing the weathering! Weathering causes rocks to deteriorate into smaller fragments that eventually come together to produce soil, which also includes organic waste and geological deposits.

Which are the different types of soil?

The soil appears to have many sorts and shapes, which further increases its suitability and dependability for use in agricultural activities.

  1. Sandy soil
    The first type of soil is sand. It is composed of little pieces of weathered rock. Sandy soils are among the poorest forms of soil for growing plants because they make it difficult for the roots of the plants to absorb water. Sandy soils have relatively few nutrients and a limited water-holding capacity. With this kind of soil, the drainage system functions pretty effectively. Usually, the breakdown or fragmentation of rocks like granite, limestone and quartz results in soil that resembles sand.
  2. Silt soil
    Silt soil is known to include significantly smaller particles than sandy soil and is composed of rock and other mineral particles that are larger than clay but smaller than sand. Because it is smooth and fine, the soil retains water better than sand. Since silt is easily moved by flowing currents, it is usually found close to rivers, lakes and other bodies of water. Silt soil is the most fertile among the other three types of mentioned soil. It is also applied in agricultural methods to boost soil fertility.
  3. Clay soil
    Clay has the smallest particles in comparison to silt and sandy soil. The soil's particles are tightly packed, with minimal to zero airspace between them. The clay soil is impassable for moisture and air and has a great ability to hold water. It feels rather sticky to the touch while wet; smooth when dried. Clay is the heaviest and densest type of soil; it does not drain properly and does not allow plant roots to extend far.
  4. Loamy soil
    Loam is the fourth type of soil. Sand, silt and clay are mixed together to create loamy soil, which benefits from each element's advantages. For instance, it can retain moisture and nutrients, which makes it perfect for growing. This soil is also referred to as agricultural soil since all three types of soil materials—sandy, clay and silt—are in balance and exist. Loamy soil has elevated calcium and pH levels in addition to these because of its inorganic origins.

How to prepare the soil before planting seeds?

Soil is created through a convergence of physical, chemical and biological processes. The soil contains both biotic and abiotic elements. Agricultural soil science is the study of soil and edaphic conditions for the production of food and fibre. Soil, a complex mixture of minerals, organic matter, water and other factors that sustains life on earth, must be prepared before seeds are sown.   1. Ploughing
    During the soil preparation procedure, the hard soil is broken up and turned with a plough. This process is known as ploughing or tilling. The three primary tools or equipment for ploughing are a hoe, a cultivator and a plough. These tools are used to loosen and churn the soil in the fields so that it can be reduced to grain size before the seeds are sown.
    Through ploughing, nutrient-rich soil is also raised to the surface. Ploughing is a highly useful tool for soil preparation since it may be used to incorporate manure, get rid of weeds, get rid of infectious illnesses and insects and perform other duties. Ploughs made of wood or iron is used for this.
  2. Soil Leveling
    For the purpose of preparing the soil, the ground that has been dug up in the field is leveled with a leveler. A substantial wooden or iron board is employed for this.
    Ploughed and levelled fields aid in ensuring that water is distributed uniformly when crops are irrigated. By levelling ploughed fields, moisture loss can be prevented.
  3. Manuring the soil
    Manuring is the final step in the soil preparation process after ploughing and leveling. It helps refilling the abundant nutrients in the soil. In order to increase soil productivity, manuring ensures that the three main nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are provided.
    Manuring is a crucial phase in soil preparation since it supplies a variety of nutrients and organic fertilisers. For the purpose of improving the soil's structure, moisture-holding capacity, aeration and water infiltration, compost and other manures are frequently added to the soil.

Which major tools are required for soil preparation?

  1. Plough
    Farmers have traditionally prepared the land with a plough, which is a simple tool. It has a triangular shape with a pointed edge. Ploughs were traditionally pulled by animals like bulls, oxen and others. Its three parts are the beam, ploughshare and plough shaft.
  2. Hoe
    A hoe is a straightforward tool for preparing the soil that is used for weeding and aerating the soil. Hoes have long wooden handles with variously shaped iron blades attached. In agricultural fields, this tool is also pulled by animals.
  3. Cultivator
    For soil preparation, the most highly developed tool used is a cultivator. Due to this tool time, labour and energy are all greatly reduced. A cultivator and a tractor, both are used for ploughing side-by-side.

Soil preparation is crucial to agriculture. The soil might stop being fertile as a result of continuing farming. To reestablish its fertility, the soil must be ready. We should till the ground before spreading the seed to get rid of weeds in order to preserve the nutrients in the soil.
