Because agriculture is carried out on such a big scale, the agricultural wastes created must be properly managed and decomposed through an agricultural waste management programme. Agricultural wastes, which contain numerous chemicals, minute metal particles, medications, and infections, can be detrimental to the environment and humans if they are not properly disposed of. When fertilizers are administered to crops, the nutrients are taken by the plants, while other elements in the soil are generally rendered harmless. The waste management program's goal is to keep manure and contaminated waters out of surface and groundwater, protecting the environment and living species. It should be assured that manure nutrients are applied to crops in such a way that nutrients are available in the proper proportions.

Compost is the most basic approach for agricultural waste management. Vermiculture is a type of biotechnology that turns trash into compost. Agricultural waste comprises biodegradable hemicellulose and cellulose components, which provide abundant nutrients to plants after decomposition. Cow dung, which is derived from animals and is rich in nutrients and microbes, can be utilised as a manure and is widely available in rural regions.
Currently, India generates over 960 million tonnes of solid waste materials each year as a by-product of industrial, mining, municipal, agricultural, and other industries. Around 350 million tonnes are organic agricultural wastes, 290 million tonnes are inorganic waste from the industrial and mining industries, and roughly 4.5 million tonnes are considered to be hazardous in nature.
Efforts are also being undertaken to turn agricultural waste into biogas, which may be used to generate electricity. As people become more aware of renewable energy sources, this will become a future trend.
